Building Your Family Through Surrogacy: How to Choose Your Egg Donor

Posted

If you’re building your family through surrogacy, you may want or need to use an egg donor. Many people need to use egg donors.  These include women who do not have viable eggs or who are concerned about passing on diseases or conditions that may be hereditary. Same sex couples and single men will also need an egg donor for a successful surrogate pregnancy.

How do you select your egg donor?

The right egg donor depends a lot on what your personal preferences are. Some intended parents want their baby to resemble their family as much as possible and may look for someone of similar ethnicity, coloring, or height. Others look for traits like intelligence or athleticism.

For most intended parents, the primary worry is selecting a healthy egg donor who has the best chance of producing viable eggs.

How do you get the information you need to decide on an egg donor?

The surrogacy/egg donor agency will give you quite a bit of information to start with such as:

  • A picture of the donor, so you can view their physical appearance
  • Age, height and weight
  • Assurance that she is healthy
  • Education and/or SAT scores
  • Athletic, arts or musical ability

Additional questions you may have include the following:

Family history. You may have questions regarding the number of siblings they have, what diseases or conditions may run in the family, and general health and longevity.

Donation history. Has she donated before? How many eggs were retrieved? How many were viable? Did any result in successful pregnancies?

Availability. You may find a donor who seems ideal, but if she is working with another family when you’re ready to get started, you may need to select another donor or wait until she is available again.

Keep an open mind.

Try not to set your heart on one donor. Select your best match, of course, but have a backup plan in case the match won’t work for any number of reasons. Rank three to five donors who you would be happy to work with, so you don’t have to revisit the selection project if you run into a bump in the road with your first-choice donor.
