IVF Cycling: Advice for Gestational Carriers

As a gestational carrier, there are many factors to consider to prepare yourself both mentally and physically for your surrogacy journey. You and the intended parents will work with a physician to keep you healthy and on track throughout.

You will typically begin in a physician’s office where your reproductive health will be assessed. Assuming all is well, the next step in the process is for you and the intended mother/egg donor to synchronize your menstrual cycles. This will ensure that your body is prepared to receive the embryo or embryos created by the intended parents.

Both you and the intended mother/egg donor will take birth control for about 14 days to begin regulating your cycles. At the end of that time, you both will normally begin injections that will further control your cycle and ensure that your uterus is ready when the intended parents are. In the next step, you will be given estrogen then progesterone, to prepare your uterine lining for implantation.

Throughout the process, you may experience some side effects, many of which you may find similar to premenstrual symptoms. You may also have skin irritation at the injection sites, abdominal bloating, headaches, breast tenderness, and nausea.

You will undergo an ultrasound examination to determine that your endometrial lining is healthy and the ovaries have no cysts. Meanwhile, the intended mother’s or egg donor’s eggs will be retrieved and fertilized with sperm and incubated for 2-5 days before IVF occurs.

You’ll have a follow-up transvaginal ultrasound and blood work to be sure the lining is developing properly – if so, the embryo will be implanted in about five days.  In ten days, you’ll return for a pregnancy blood test.

If the implantation was successful, you can focus on maintaining a healthy pregnancy. If not you, the intended parents, the physician, and the surrogacy agency will discuss whether and when to begin another attempt.
