As a surrogate, you are probably nervous about meeting intended parents. Starting a relationship and getting to know them over the course of the surrogacy journey can be daunting. When you’re an introvert, it’s even harder. But with a little bit of extra effort and a willingness to get out of your comfort zone, you can build a rewarding relationship.
Ask for help
Your surrogacy agency can lay a lot of the groundwork for you. They can tell you what the intended parents are like, and they may offer a little bit about their interests so you know what to ask. The agency is there for you and they will be eager to help you connect with the intended parents.
Break the ice online
Sometimes it’s easier to get to know someone via email or text before you meet in person. Don’t postpone the in-person meeting, but starting the relationship with a text-based conversation might make your first encounter a little less awkward.
They say that information is power – so is preparation. Start with a list of questions you have compiled in advance. It will give you a sense of security and control going into your meeting and ensure you haven’t missed anything that is important to know. Consider questions like these:
- Do you have other children? Pets?
- What do you do in your spare time?
- What is the most important factor in choosing a surrogate?
- Tell me about your family. Are they excited about your surrogacy plans?
- What got you interested in adding to your family through surrogacy?
Try a walk and talk
Your first meeting will probably be in the agency office, but if you try a more friendly or active venue for your next meeting it might be more comfortable and conversation might flow more easily. Consider a park where you can get fresh air and maybe even imagine future children swinging on the swings.
Remember it will get easier
It’s bound to be tough at first, especially as an introvert, but remember you have a very important common interest. That makes it worth the effort to get over whatever hurdles there are to establishing a relationship.
While it’s not easy to get out of your comfort zone when you are an introvert, there is nothing more important than establishing a friendly working relationship with the intended parents.
