No one knows better than the founder and Surrogacy Program Director of Surrogate Solutions, Gayle Garrett, the many ways surrogacy can change the lives of both gestational surrogates and intended parents. Today we are talking with Gayle about some of the surprises surrogacy can bring and the impact it can have on everyone it touches.
For both parties it creates an extended family, Gayle said. “This is often something neither sees coming. They expect it to be mostly a business transaction, but it ends up being so much more. The surrogate and parents often go on to be lifelong friends.”
Gestational surrogates may fully understand they are doing something important, but they have no idea they will feel it’s the single greatest thing they have ever done. Some will go on to be a surrogate many times over and it never ceases to be gratifying. It gives them a broader perspective of what people go through.
Typically, people choose to become surrogates because they conceived easily and had uneventful pregnancies and deliveries. Surrogacy shows them the perspective of those who struggle to start a family – something that came easily to them. Most people assume they will be able to have children when they are ready for them, so infertility comes as a surprise.
Life changes are huge for intended parents. They have been so focused on achieving a positive pregnancy outcome they forget about what a massive change a new baby will bring to their household.
After all the waiting, the nine months of pregnancy go surprisingly fast. One moment you’re meeting your surrogate, the next, you’re seeing your first ultrasound, the next, you’re holding your new baby. It all goes by in the blink of an eye.
Some lack confidence in their parenting abilities at first, but every parent is on equal footing once the baby is born. Most parents are just muddling through and doing their best. Carrying the baby during pregnancy doesn’t provide any insight into why they are crying or won’t sleep after they are born. The only difference between an experienced parent and an inexperienced one is the veteran parent knows they are just muddling through.
Gayle is a registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gayle is not only experienced in bringing surrogates together with couples and individuals hoping to build a family of their own, she is also the mother of two and has served as a surrogate herself.
