Egg Donation Isn’t Just for Surrogacy

Although egg donation is a big part of surrogacy, it is not solely exclusive to surrogates. Egg donation has also proven to be a wonderful option for families who are capable of carrying a baby, but are unable to conceive with their own eggs. For many intended parents, working with an egg donor may be the perfect solution to starting the family of their dreams.

Many situations exist in which an individual or couple may need the assistance of an egg donor to start a family. Some common conditions include age, early menopause, repeated failed pregnancies, or other medical issues. The caring decision to become an egg donor helps the donor earn some additional income while providing a wonderful and priceless gift to others struggling with infertility.

Intended parents place all their hopes and dreams of having a baby into the hands of their donor, so it is of utmost importance that potential donors understand both the impact they are making on another person’s life as well as how the process works. While becoming an egg donor is a big commitment, it is a completely safe procedure. Although it may sound complicated initially, the egg donation process can actually be summed up in three simple steps:

  • Matching donors and intended parents. Not just anyone can become an egg donor, and donors are often recruited. Egg donors must be in good health, between the ages of 21-28 years old, non-smokers, reliable and responsible with flexible schedules. Egg donation agencies specialize in matching donors with intended parents to ensure everything goes as smoothly, comfortably, and happily as possible.
  • Extracting eggs. Following the initial health screening, a fertility specialist will work with the donor to harvest the eggs. The egg donation process will last between three and six weeks each time the eggs are extracted. Both the donor and intended mother will be given hormone therapy for the first few weeks to sync their reproductive cycles. The donor will then receive a series of injections to prepare the mature eggs for release. The actual egg extraction procedure is done under sedation and takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.
  • Post extraction. The eggs will be fertilized then monitored for about five days until they are ready for implantation. They are then transferred to the intended mother’s uterus for implantation into the uterine wall which takes about one week.
