If you are intended parents in Washington State, you have recently heard the good news. The Uniform Parentage Act was recently passed. The law will take effect on January 1, 2019. This legislation makes Gestational Surrogacy legal statewide. “Altruistic surrogacy” was already permitted in Washington, but surrogates could not be compensated as they are in other states where it was legal. This change in law will make it much easier for infertile couples to create families of their own.
This new legislation doesn’t mean you are limited to working with an in-state agency. No matter where you decide to begin your surrogacy journey, here are a few things you may want to consider.
How can you find a great surrogacy agency?
If you can find an agency located in Washington with the systems in place to begin offering gestational surrogacy, that could be the most convenient option for you. However, you may find you are more comfortable with an agency in a state where it has been legal for some time because it will be more established. Check out reviews and interview several agencies to be sure you have selected the best one for your family.
How can you select a surrogate?
Your agency will work closely with you to be sure you make the right match, but there are a few general guidelines to keep in mind. You don’t have to be true friends, but your gestational surrogate should be someone with whom you share the same values. You should feel comfortable with her and she should answer questions openly. Are you on the same page on issues such as selective reduction, participation in the birth, and the relationship you expect going forward? An experienced agency can help you know what questions to ask.
How much does gestational surrogacy cost?
Intended parents typically spend $65 to $100k. If you would like a more detailed breakdown of the costs, see our previous post. Medical expenses make up a sizable portion of the costs, but there are a lot of expenses associated with pregnancy and birth you may not have thought of. Learn more about what to expect here.
Are there financing options?
Surrogacy expenses can seem daunting for intended parents who don’t have a large savings account, but that doesn’t mean that surrogacy is out of reach for your family. Couples often finance surrogacy through home equity loans, credit cards, 401(k) loans, or loans from friends or family. Your agency may have additional financing options for you as well. Don’t hesitate to speak candidly with them regarding any concerns you have about financing your surrogacy journey.
