Overcoming New Parent Nerves

As an intended parent, you’ve spent years trying to get pregnant and have a baby. But now that the time is here, and your baby will soon be joining your family, you may not know what to expect. Don’t worry. Whether families birth children themselves, adopt, or create families through gestational surrogacy, they share many of the same concerns.

Here’s how you can prepare.

Ask for advice. Ask them for their “hacks” such as how to get a baby to sleep or which are the best diapers to buy. Ask plenty of people so you have a good cross-section.

Don’t reinvent the wheel. You’re not the first people to have welcomed a new baby into your family. Take advantage of the experience of your friends and family. Ask them about the toughest things about being a new parent. What surprised them most? What was easier than they expected?

Read a lot. There are plenty of blogs and books available that discuss what it’s like to have a new baby in the house. The more you read the more confident and prepared you will feel.

Look for support. Find online and in-person support groups for new parents in general and new parents through gestational surrogacy specifically. This will encourage you to know you’re not alone.

Ask for help. Your friends and family will most likely be happy to help, whether that means watching the baby so you can get things done, throwing in a load of laundry, or picking up some groceries.

Outsource what you can. There is no shortage of options to get things done. Book a cleaning service, order your groceries online, or have meals delivered. This will give you more time with your baby and time to relax or get things done.

Make time for yourself. A new baby can be overwhelming. Be sure each of you has some time to spend on your own interests. It’s tough to do the first month or so, but once you get into a routine, schedule time for exercise, hobbies, and interests, alone and together.

Have date nights. When you’ve spent so long trying to have a baby, it may seem counterintuitive to leave them behind to go to dinner or a movie. It’s important to keep your relationship strong. A little break to reconnect and recharge will make you better parents.
