6 Thoughtful Gifts to Show You Care

The relationship between intended parents and gestational surrogates often grows close over the course of the surrogacy journey. To show appreciation, the intended parents and surrogates may want to buy gifts for each other.  Whether it’s to mark milestones throughout the journey or celebrate a special occasion, thoughtful gifts can be positive for both the giver and the recipient.

Now that the holidays are near, you may be thinking of remembering your IPs or surrogate during this special time of year. Here are a few ideas to consider:

Surrogate gifts:

Show your appreciation for the gestational surrogate by pampering her during the pregnancy. Great ways to do this include:

Pregnancy massage or spa treatments. Choose treatments that are safe and healthy for pregnant women. This can keep her healthy and happy and show her you understand and appreciate the sacrifice she is making for you.

Healthy snack basket. Make a basket of her favorite snacks that she can enjoy throughout her pregnancy. It will be an unexpected treat she can use when she needs a between-meal pick-me-up.

Cleaning service. If your surrogate is working full-time or raising a family, cleaning the house can move down to the bottom of the priority list. But everyone enjoys a clean house and having time to spend with family and friends (rather than cleaning) could be a big blessing.

Gifts for the surrogate’s children. The surrogate’s family makes sacrifices too, and it’s nice to acknowledge their sacrifices with small gifts. Children love feeling special and getting a little extra attention.

Intended Parent gifts:

For intended parents, some of the best gifts you can give are those that make them feel like part of the pregnancy. Consider thoughtful gifts that make them feel they are not missing a thing, even if they are far away. Here are a couple of ideas:

Framed photos. It’s common today to share photos digitally. You can email or text them pictures such as “baby bump” pictures. But for a special treat, put a significant picture into a nice frame they can look at now and save.

Pregnancy journal. Keep the IPs involved every step of the way by journaling. This can take many forms, such as a scrapbook, a journal created for pregnant women, or just a simple notebook. Choose the one you are most likely to keep up with. You know yourself best. Do you find it relaxing and enjoyable to decorate with pictures, markers, and washi tape or would you rather dash off a few notes before slipping into bed? The IPs will appreciate seeing the day-to-day progress of the pregnancy either way.

Gifts for both:

Since you’re both working toward a common goal (a healthy baby!), you may enjoy some of the same gifts. Here are a few to consider:

Restaurant gift cards. Ideally, choose places that deliver. Surrogates will appreciate it later in the pregnancy. Intended parents will enjoy it when they have a newborn they are getting accustomed to and may not want to take the time to cook.

Sentimental items. There are a lot of specialty items geared toward surrogacy or new babies, such as jewelry and art items. You can find them online, particularly on sites like Etsy.

Handmade items. If you are crafty, you can make something special for your IPs or surrogate that will be personal. If not, there are plenty of places where you can get personalized items such as baby footprint kits that will mean a lot.

With gestational surrogacy, you are either giving or receiving the greatest gift there is. But if you want to go a step beyond and show you care, a small gift is always welcome.
