Breaking Through Misconceptions of Gestational Surrogacy

Although Gestational Surrogacy has been in practice for more than three decades, its common recognition is still fairly new in mainstream society. As with most topics that are not completely understood, many misconceptions still surround the Gestational Surrogacy journey, specifically regarding the compensation piece. Just this past year, a researcher from the University of Texas at Arlington, Heather Jacobson, an associate professor of sociology, published an eye-opening study finding that Gestational Surrogacy is not only frequently misunderstood, but also unevenly judged.

Jacobson conducted her research between 2009 – 2015 by interviewing Surrogates, Intended Parents, family members, physicians, and family lawyers through surrogacy agencies and other online platforms.  The goal of her research was to explore the social attitudes regarding Gestational Surrogacy, infertility, and reproductive technologies. The main findings in Jacobson’s completed research suggest that Surrogates as well as those involved in Surrogacy from the outside must navigate basic misconceptions regarding the motivations, experiences, and medical procedures involved in surrogacy.

The biggest misconception uncovered in Jacobson’s research is that outsiders have difficulty comprehending how and why someone would want to carry a baby for someone else, often a complete stranger. Through her interviews, Jacobson reported that many Surrogates enjoyed being pregnant and viewed pregnancy as a skill they possessed. Additionally, Jacobson’s study also found that despite the amount of time, labor, and re-organization of daily life routines, the majority of Surrogates were reluctant to view surrogacy as work because of the pure joy and gratitude they gained from the experience.

While misconceptions surrounding Gestational Surrogacy abound, Surrogates maintain it is one of the most meaningful and rewarding experiences, and many express desires to become a Surrogate again in the future.
