Strategies for Helping Your Surrogate During (and Right After) Transfer

The time during and immediately following an embryo transfer is critical for both the Surrogate and Intended Parents alike. The embryo transfer is one of the last steps on the journey to becoming pregnant, so it is often a time of both excitement and nervous anticipation for all parties. While there is nothing during the hours following the embryo transfer that will 100% guarantee a pregnancy, there are many things the Intended Parents can do to help the Surrogate and her family feel comfortable, relaxed, and stress-free during the embryo transfer and the first few days after.

  • Meal delivery. Many Intended Parents have reported providing home-cooked or restaurant purchased meals to their Surrogate and her family during the 72-hours following the embryo transfer. This can be extremely helpful for Surrogates who have needed to travel for the transfer and are staying at a hotel in an unfamiliar area, but is a wonderful and appreciated gesture for Surrogates who are able to stay near home as well.
  • Children’s activities. Your Surrogate may be asked to remain on strict bed rest for a period of time following the embryo transfer. This can be extra difficult for Surrogates with small children. Consider providing fun activities for your Surrogate’s children or even offering to watch them for a few hours. Your Surrogate will be concerned about her children during this time, and knowing they are having fun and in good hands will help keep her relaxed.
  • Care packages. Bed rest is challenging, and it is extremely important for your surrogate to remain relaxed during this period of post-transfer recovery. Consider compiling a care package for your Surrogate with items to keep her entertained during this time, or simply help her relax. Books, DVDs, journals, games, brain teasers, blankets, slippers and cards letting her know how much you appreciate the gift she is giving are all great ideas for a Surrogate care package.

Keeping your Surrogate and her family comfortable, relaxed, and cheerful during this downtime is a vital part of this exciting milestone on your journey together. Letting your Surrogate know your appreciation for the joyous gift she is providing you by helping her out with the little things can be the greatest gift you can provide her during this time.
