Gestational Surrogacy and Your Mental Health

In preparing to be a gestational surrogate, you probably put a lot of time into getting yourself in top physical form, but are you in prime mental shape for all of the emotional ups and down that accompany each step in the surrogacy process?

If you have been diagnosed with a mental illness, it is unlikely that you are a candidate for gestational surrogacy, but even going into the process in top psychological cannot guarantee that you won’t be buffeted by the ups and downs of this highly-charged, emotional event.

Do you understand the risks? Surrogacy brings physical and emotional risks that impact both the surrogate and her family. Ensure that you have access to a counselor and a strong support system who can talk you through any difficulties.

Do you have a strong support system? Is your family on board with your decision to become a surrogate? Knowing that your family is willing to pick up the slack if you have complications can make your surrogacy journey easier.

Are you prepared for hormonal changes? Even before transfer, you are bombarded with hormones to prepare for your pregnancy. This can lead to mood swings, depression, anxiety and a whole host of physical and psychological challenges.

Do you have realistic expectations? Even if you have previously had uneventful pregnancies, complications can arise. This can lead to depression or feelings of failure. Speaking to a mental health professional trained in fertility issues or the surrogacy process can make a world of difference.

Are you at risk for post partum depression? You probably answered screening questions prior to acceptance as a gestational surrogate, but every pregnancy is different. The sudden drop in estrogen and progesterone immediately after delivery impacts every woman differently.

After growing close to the intended parents and spending a lot of time with them, they are now off with their new family. Even though you are well-prepared for this eventuality, it can be a bit of a letdown.

How can you manage your emotional health? Reach out to your support system. Talk to sympathetic family or friends, reach out to your surrogacy agency and don’t hesitate to get help from mental health professionals.
